There’s a short window every year when Nashville turns gold, and it happens to be our favorite time to photograph families. The air cools off, the light gets softer and warmer in the late afternoon, and the hills around town fill in with red, orange, and yellow. It’s a season that does a lot of the work for you — even a quick session outdoors ends up looking rich and cinematic without much effort at all.
We tend to point families toward a handful of go-to spots depending on the look they’re after. Percy Warner Park and Radnor Lake give you rolling hills, tree cover, and still water that mirrors the color overhead, while Centennial Park pairs that same foliage with a bit of architecture in the background for families who want something a little more iconic. Sevier Park is a quieter, close-in option with easy paths and open lawn space that’s forgiving for kids who’d rather run around than pose, and downtown Nashville works well for families who want an urban backdrop mixed in with the rustic feel of the season.
Our approach leans relaxed rather than rigid — we’d rather catch a real laugh or an unplanned hug than force a stiff, lined-up pose. That means giving kids room to be kids, letting parents actually enjoy the session instead of just gritting through it, and using the season’s natural warmth to do the heavy lifting. A little planning goes a long way too: coordinating outfits in deep greens, warm neutrals, mustard, and burgundy (rather than matching head-to-toe), layering with sweaters and jackets for texture, and scheduling around whenever your kids are happiest.
Fall in Nashville doesn’t last long, but the portraits from it tend to last for years — on walls, in holiday cards, and in the kind of family archive you actually want to look back on.
