Natalie turned 40 in style, gathering her husband and closest friends at a mid-century modern property in Palm Springs built for exactly this kind of day. No wedding, no engagement — just a milestone birthday, a house full of color, and a cake worth its own mention: two tiers, a pair of hand-painted flamingos, and a topper that said what everyone in the room was already thinking.
The house did a lot of the work for us. Warm wood paneling, a sunburst mirror over the fireplace, green velvet swivel chairs, and light pouring through floor-to-ceiling windows gave us backdrop after backdrop without ever leaving the living room. Natalie and her husband moved through the space easily, catching each other’s eye across a coffee table or holding hands between rooms — the kind of portraits that don’t feel staged because nothing about them was.
Once we stepped outside, the golden Palm Springs light took over. Palm trees, blooming bougainvillea, and that late-afternoon glow turned every corner of the garden into a portrait spot, from an orange outdoor sofa to a carved wooden bench to a tiled entryway. Some of our favorite frames of the day came from right here — a forehead kiss in a doorway, Natalie laughing while she fought to keep her sun hat from blowing away.
By evening, the party had filled the living room with friends, cocktails, and conversation — a toast caught mid-sentence, two guests cracking up in front of a wall of vintage masks, Natalie glowing in a red dress with a glass of champagne in hand. Sessions like this are exactly why we love photographing personal celebrations: there’s no script to follow, just real people enjoying each other, and our job is simply to be there when it happens.
