Rehearsal dinners don’t usually double as gallery openings, but the Shapiros pulled it off at Heather James Art Gallery on El Paseo in Palm Desert. Guests made the trip in from Los Angeles just for the evening, and the setting more than earned it — wall after wall of serious art, in the kind of room where every sightline gives you something worth photographing.
Dinner came courtesy of Mr. Lyon’s, the Palm Springs restaurant that turned catering into its own kind of performance: banana leaves lining trays of enchiladas, ceviche, tacos, and a full spread of Mexican-inspired dishes, plated with as much care as the art on the walls around them. Between the gallery’s collection and the food styling, it was hard to point a camera in a bad direction.
What stuck with us most, though, was the room itself — the warmth between the Shapiros and their guests, the easy joy of a celebration that felt more like a gathering of old friends than a formal event. Good art and good food set the stage, but it’s that kind of energy that actually makes a rehearsal dinner memorable, and worth photographing well.
